Brian, congrats on the 3rd place finish in Holland. I heard you had good success with Spin Doctors and flies during the tournament, but we just couldn't get them going steady. I'm fishing Holland again later this week and would like to get my fly program going good.
I'm pretty sure we are using the right colors, tried riggers, wire, superline, mono divers, and even tried them on some copper and cores too. We are running 18-26" leaders on mainly 8" flashers, 8-25' leads, speed from 2-3 mph. In 80-120 fow we had been targeting 35-100 down primarily.
Any rigging advise, or presentation suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim Stein

Tim,
You probably just need to learn about speed and presentation. I run a down speed of 1.9-2.3 mph with spin doctors. The best presentation is usually divers. I can probably tell you what you are doing wrong and tell me if I am right here. When you run spinnies you need to run almost all spinnies. You can not run a spinnie on one rigger or one diver. You need to run all spinnies and different colors to find out what they want, because it is just like spoons as far as colors and such. I run 15-25 ft leads on the riggers and 22" leads on the flies with 8". Start with blues and greens because these colors work best most of the time. This weekend we caught most of our fish in the 30-45 foot range. It is also very important to get your troll direction right. Last weekend south was the best troll. Try running all spinnies and get the speed right and let me know how you do.
Good Luck,
Capt. Brian

Thanks for the comeback and tips Captain Brian. I'll give it a go and report back with what I find. Hopefully I can turn things around. We ran at most 7 of 9 rods with spinnies, but not until after 10 am. Most of the time we had 2-4 in the water.
One other question about the 22" leader, that is from the end of the loop to the front or back of the fly?
