Right now there is a Captain in the Grand Haven area looking for a mate. He has ask me for any suggestions. If any one is interested please let me know. This boat fishes alot and will fish through mid September. It would be preferred if the mate can cover almost everyday but some weekends and go from May - September 15.
I am thinking about having a mate training class this May if I can keep the dates open. It would be a two day class and would be $250 a person. The class will take place on the water and at the dock. We will spend 5 hours on the water and 2 hours at the dock.
Items covered:
-general patterns of salmon in Lake Michigan
-Importance of temperature and speed
-setting of rods for riggers to copper
-customer interaction
-docking assistance (boat handling)
-boat cleaning
-fish cleaning
What you will receive:
-setup to get your mates card
-two days of fishing
-a certificate of Sea Flea Mate Training
-Improved fishing skills
-a reference for getting a mates job
If interested please let me know soon so I can get the days needed blocked out. I need four minimum to have a class. I will probably only have time for one class in May.
I will need a $75 deposit.

I am intrested in being a first mate this summer and ran everything from riggers to copper and fish lake M 3 or 4 times a week from April to October. and clean hundreds of salmon a year. But $250 is kind of iffy for me although possible but if the class is not needed I'm your man.

Not requiring the class, but I can recommend someone easier that I have seen in action. I would like somewhat of a resume about yourself. If you want you can give me a call. 616-886-1306 We can talk over the phone. During the day is the best time to call me.
I can tell you if you take the class you will learn alot. I will be looking for a mate for my afternoon charters and I will be using someone that has taken the mate class.

The first mate class is filled. If I get enough interest I will be having another in June.
I know of two captains looking for experienced mates right now.
Two of the students were at the Grand Haven Offshore Seminar this weekend. It was great to see that interest in the younger generation. Really looking forward to this first class.
If anyone is interested in the June class make a post or email me.
